Statistics indicate Iowa is one of the nation’s leaders in chronic abuse among its alcohol-related deaths. Alaska has the nation’s second-highest number of alcohol-related deaths Alcoholism Statistics per capita. Children aged 17 years and younger are much more likely to live with an alcoholic parent than they are to be diagnosed with a learning disability or ADHD.

Oregon’s alcohol-related deaths are among the nation’s oldest, with chronic abuse the most significant cause of death. Statistics indicate Ohio’s drinking habits are on par with national averages. Maine has one of the nation’s lowest rates of under-21 alcohol-related deaths. Louisiana has the nation’s highest rate of under-21 drinkers among its alcohol-related deaths. Alcohol-related deaths in Kansas are slightly more likely to involve males and underage drinkers.

Mississippi Alcohol Abuse Statistics

According to a study by the National Association of Children of Alcoholics (NACOA), there are over 11 million children in the U.S. under the age of 18 living in families with at least one alcoholic parent. The statistics provided by multiple sources further break this down to about 76 million adults in the country who have lived or are currently living with a family history of alcoholism. Overall, about 7.5 million (10.5 percent) children aged 17 or younger lived in households with at least one parent who had an alcohol use disorder (Figure 2). The 2021 NSDUH national report  includes selected estimates by race, ethnicity, and age group. It is the most comprehensive report on substance use and mental health indicators that SAMHSA has released to date. NSDUH data can also be used to estimate the number of children who live with at least one parent who has had a past year illicit drug use disorder.

In some cases, people may develop alcohol-related dementia or a cognitive disorder known as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. 2021 NSDUH report includes selected estimates by race, ethnicity, and age and is the most comprehensive key findings report to date. Here’s a snapshot of just a few organizations that may offer valuable support for families dealing with the effects of alcoholism.

The Consequences of Drug Abuse

Another significant finding of this study is that early onset drinking cannot be viewed solely as a marker or early indicator of a family history of alcoholism (i.e., not only FHP respondents but also FHN began to drink early and therefore were at increased risk for lifetime alcohol dependence). For both FHP and FHN respondents, the likelihood of lifetime alcohol dependence decreased with increasing age at drinking onset. Those findings indicate that early onset drinking implies an increased risk of dependence, regardless of family history, and that people who drink at an early age are not necessarily destined to become alcohol dependent by virtue of having a positive family history. Moreover, a family history of alcoholism may be an indicator of shared or common environmental factors; genetic influences; or, more likely, a combination of both.

However, the prevalence of lifetime dependence generally was far greater among FHP respondents than among FHN respondents. For example, the prevalence of lifetime dependence among respondents who began drinking at age 21 or older was two to three times greater among those classified as FHP compared with those classified as FHN. All the trends noted for the total sample of drinkers also were observed for each race-gender subgroup of lifetime drinkers (see tables 2 and ​and3).3).
